New Iraq/Afghanistan War Memorial for Texas Veterans

Posted on November 27 2017

On December 2, 2017, there is a new memorial going up on the Capital grounds. This memorial is designed to honor all the Iraq/Afghanistan war veterans from the state of Texas.

225,000 Texas service members were called to service in support of those Iraq/Afghanistan conflict. “The overall story is that the service member is in limbo between heaven and heart. His wife and child are earthbound; he’s got one leg on the ground and one foot lifted, being carried off by an angel,” said Sandra Van Zandt, the artist who created the sculpture.

On Dec. 2, a new monument to honor Texas service members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan after 9/11 will be unveiled on the Capitol grounds.

I remember seeing legislation to get this pushed to have its installation on 9/11 of this year while working for the Senate Veteran Affairs Committee. I am glad that it finally has an installation date so soon! While I may not be a Texas veteran, this memorial speaks volumes. I can't wait to see it. I will post pictures ASAP!
